How To Use A Powder Face Mask

There are so many options for face masks. It’s nearly overwhelming, but if you’re into face masks as much as we are, you have to agree that it’s nice to have a mask for every mood. You can go with the single use sheet mask that’s extremely simple to use and you can take on the go, a pot of fancy and abundant goop, or in a pinch you can harken back to your (maybe just my) teenage years and pick up a tube of Queen Helene’s.

But many of the makers we love are opting for powdered face masks. And it isn’t by accident -- there are tons of benefits to investing in this delivery method for your self-care rituals.

They last longer

We’ve all opened up the cupboard to reach for our favorite mask to discover it’s fallen victim to time and has dried out. Powered masks can’t do this because they’re...already dry. They wait for you to be ready to mix.

They’re cleaner

Because powered masks don’t need to be stabilized for a long shelf life, they don’t need some of the preservatives you’ll find in conventional masks. The result is a mixture of just the good stuff.

Okay, that’s great, right? But. Our favorite reason?

If you want to be inventive, you can get really crazy.

You get to make your own potion!

Use water to mix your mask if you’re feeling goldilocks about things and you need to stick to the middle ground. The thing is that powdered face masks are formulated to mix perfectly with water, so it’s a wonderful way to enjoy them. The masks included in an IDYLHOUR box shine when mixed solely with water -- it’s a foundational ingredient for nurturing and transformation. On the other hand, you could go wild and play kitchen wizard.

  • Mix with organic yogurt to amp up the exfoliation by way of the lactic acid it adds.

  • Add honey to act as a humectant, which is a cool way of saying it helps your skin pull in more moisture.

  • Use a hydrosol -- a water-based skincare product made by distilling flowers, leaves, fruits or other materials -- to dial up the aromatherapy. Adding a calendula hydrosol will help to calm irritated skin while a turmeric hydrosol will add brightening qualities. Rose hydrosol is an absolute favorite and will kick up the indulgence factor by about a thousand.

Dedicate a bowl for mixing powdered face masks and don’t forget a face mask brush! We’ve got them in our shop because they’re such an asset when it comes to making your IDYLHOUR feel like a truly luxurious spa day.
